One of the many memories as a youngster were the birthday get togethers with the family. It may have been with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins usually taking place at grandpa and grandma Gehrer’s house. There was always that one gift that you would receive and you could always count on it year after year. Like the annual flight of the swallows to Capistrano it was the birthday phone call from Sister James.
The soft spoken little nun always went out of her way to make sure that she called to wish you a happy birthday and to make sure you knew that you were being prayed for. Now I won’t lie to you. If it was your birthday and you were at the big family get together and the phone rang you would try to slink into the corner because you knew it would be sister and you’d be forced to talk to her. But little did we know at the time, it was her prayers and those of her fellow sisters that got us through to our next birthday. We were blessed and didn’t even know it. Thank you Sister for all the birthday blessings. And to keep the tradition alive here’s one more to get another family member through to his next birthday. Happy Birthday Kory!
